CLAT PG (Common Law Admission Test)

CLAT PG is a national-level entrance examination conducted for admission to postgraduate (PG) law courses (LL.M.).

CLAT PG scores are accepted by most National Law Universities (NLUs) in India, several private law colleges.

Conducted by: Consortium of National Law Universities (an organization formed by National Law Universities to conduct the CLAT examination and manage the admission process).

Eligibility: LL.B. degree (3-Year or 5-Year) from a recognized university.

Exam Pattern: Offline (Pen-and-Paper) consisting of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs).

Mode: Offline (Pen-and-Paper).

Total Questions: 120 Questions.

Total Marks: 120 Marks.

Frequency: Conducted once a year (usually in December).

Qualification:

  • Must hold an LL.B. degree (3-Year or 5-Year) from a recognized university.
  • Candidates appearing in the final year of their LL.B. programme are also eligible to apply, subject to meeting the admission requirements.

Age:

  • There is no upper age limit for appearing in CLAT PG.

Minimum Marks:

  • General/OBC/PwD/NRI/PIO/OCI Categories: At least 50% marks (or equivalent grade) in the LL.B. degree.
  • SC/ST Categories: At least 45% marks (or equivalent grade) in the LL.B. degree.

Attempts:

  • There is no restriction on the number of attempts.

Nationality:

  • Indian and NRI's are eligible to apply, subject to the admission rules of the participating universities.
  • Foreign nationals are not eligible

Mode: Offline (Pen-and-Paper).

Frequency: Conducted once a year (usually in December).

Duration: 120 Minutes (2 Hours).

Total Questions: 120 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs).

Total Marks: 120 Marks.

Question Paper Structure:

  • Constitutional Law: Carries the highest weightage in the examination.
  • Other Legal Subjects: Questions are based on Jurisprudence, Administrative Law, Contract Law, Torts, Family Law, Criminal Law, Property Law, Company Law, Public International Law, Tax Law, Environmental Law, Labour & Industrial Law, and other core LL.B. subjects.

Marking Scheme:

  • Correct Answer: +1 Mark.
  • Incorrect Answer: –0.25 Mark.
  • Unattempted Question: 0 Marks (No penalty).

Students who qualify through the CLAT PG (Common Law Admission Test – Postgraduate) can apply for postgraduate law programmes offered by participating National Law Universities (NLUs) and several other law universities across India.

Postgraduate Course:

  • LL.M. (Master of Laws)

Other Opportunities:

  • Legal Officer (through participating Public Sector Undertakings, where applicable)
