CTET (Central Teacher Eligibility Test)

CTET is a national-level eligibility examination conducted to determine the eligibility of candidates for teaching positions in Central Government schools.

The examination is conducted for candidates who wish to become teachers for Classes I to VIII.

A candidate writes the CTET examination and receives a score based on their performance.

Candidates who qualify CTET become eligible to apply for teaching positions in Central Government schools such as Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs), Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs), and other schools that accept CTET scores.

Conducted by: Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

Eligibility: Senior Secondary (or equivalent) or Graduation with the required teacher training qualification.

Exam Pattern: Offline examination consisting of objective-type Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs).

Mode: Offline (Pen-and-Paper Test).

Total Papers: 2 Papers (Paper I for Classes I–V, Paper II for Classes VI–VIII).

Total Questions: 150 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) in each paper.

Total Marks: 150 Marks (1 mark per question).

Duration: 2 Hours 30 Minutes (150 minutes) per paper.

Frequency: Conducted twice every year.

Qualification:

  • Paper I (Classes I–V)
    • Passed Senior Secondary (Class 12).
    • Completed a recognized teacher training course such as:
      • Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed.)
      • Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed.)
      • Or an equivalent qualification.
  • Paper II (Classes VI–VIII)
    • Bachelor's degree.
    • Completed a recognized teacher training course such as:
      • Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.)
      • Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed.)
      • Or an equivalent qualification.
  • Both Papers
    • Candidates who meet the eligibility criteria for both papers can appear for both Paper I and Paper II.
  • Final Year Students
    • Candidates studying in the final year of the required teacher training course can also apply.

Age Limit:

  • There is no minimum or maximum age limit prescribed for CTET.

Minimum Marks:

  • The minimum marks required depend on the educational and teacher training qualification.
  • Reserved categories may receive relaxation in the minimum qualifying marks as per the official CTET notification.

Attempts:

  • There is no limit on the number of attempts for CTET.
  • Example: If a candidate appears for CTET in July 2026 but does not qualify, they can appear again in the next CTET examination.

Mode: Offline (Pen-and-Paper Test).

Papers: The examination consists of two papers.

  • Paper I: For candidates who wish to teach Classes I to V.
  • Paper II: For candidates who wish to teach Classes VI to VIII.
  • Both Papers: Candidates who is eligible for both levels can appear for both papers.

Question Type: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs).

Marking Scheme:

  • Each paper consists of 150 questions carrying 150 marks.
  • Correct Answer: +1 mark.
  • Negative Marking: There is no negative marking for incorrect answers.

Important: Candidates must score the minimum qualifying marks prescribed by CTET to receive the CTET Eligibility Certificate.

Candidates who qualify CTET become eligible to apply for teaching positions in Central Government schools and other schools that accept CTET scores.

  • Primary Teacher (PRT)
    • Teach Classes I to V.
  • Trained Graduate Teacher (TGT)
    • Teach Classes VI to VIII (subject to the recruitment rules of the school).
  • Schools that may accept CTET scores
    • Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs)
    • Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs)
    • Central Tibetan Schools
    • Schools under the Administrative Control of the Union Territories
    • Private schools that consider CTET scores
