GAT (General Ability Test)

GAT (General Ability Test) is a section of the NIFT Entrance Examination. It is not a separate admission test.

Students applying for certain NIFT courses such as Fashion Technology, Fashion Management, and some Design programmes must take the GAT as part of the NIFT admission process.

Example: A student applying for B.F.Tech (Apparel Production) at NIFT must appear for the GAT examination. Admission is based on performance in this test and other selection stages, depending on the course.

Eligibility: 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics

Mode: Online (Computer Based Test - CBT)

Questions: 150 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)

Frequency: Conducted once a year (Usually February)

Qualification:

  • Must have passed Class 12 (10+2) from a recognized board.
  • Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) are compulsory subjects.
  • Students appearing for their Class 12 exams can also apply.
  • A 3 or 4-year Engineering Diploma holder may also be eligible.

Age:

  • General / OBC-NCL: Must be under 24 years of age.
  • SC / ST / PwD: 5-year age relaxation (up to 29 years).

Min mark:

  • No minimum percentage is required.
  • A simple pass in the qualifying examination is sufficient.

Attempts:

  • There is no restriction on the number of attempts.
  • You can apply multiple times as long as you satisfy the age criteria.

Mode: Online Computer Based Test (CBT)

Frequency: Conducted once a year (Usually February)

Duration: 3 Hours (180 Minutes)

Total Questions: 150 Questions

Question Type: Objective Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)

Question Paper Structure:

The GAT paper is split into two progressive sections:

  • GAT Section A (100 Questions / 120 Minutes):
    • Communication Ability & English Comprehension: 40 Questions
    • Quantitative Ability: 20 Questions
    • Analytical & Logical Ability: 15 Questions
    • General Knowledge and Current Affairs: 25 Questions
  • GAT Section B (50 Questions / 60 Minutes):
    • Case Study (Industry Environment): 20 Questions
    • Quantitative Ability: 15 Questions
    • Analytical & Logical Ability: 15 Questions

Marking Scheme:

  • +1.00 mark for every correct response
  • -0.25 mark for every incorrect response (25% penalty)
  • 0 marks for unattempted questions

NIFT GAT scores for the Technology track grant direct entry into core apparel production and management specialisations across premier NIFT campuses.

Undergraduate Programme (4 Years)

  • B.F.Tech (Bachelor of Fashion Technology) - Apparel Production: The core engineering-focused undergraduate course that maps manufacturing technology, automation, quality control, and supply chain logistics.

Postgraduate Programmes (2 Years)

  • M.F.Tech (Master of Fashion Technology): An advanced postgraduate degree diving deeper into production systems, manufacturing setups, eco-sustainable fashion engineering, and smart textiles.
  • M.F.M (Master of Fashion Management): A postgraduate track focused directly on commercial luxury retail, apparel merchandising, international marketing, and e-commerce resource management.

Available course seats and infrastructure configurations vary from campus to campus based on annual central seat-allocation updates.
