GATE Economics

GATE Economics is a national-level entrance examination conducted as part of the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE).

The examination is designed for students who wish to pursue postgraduate studies, research programmes, and higher education opportunities in Economics and related fields.

Conducted by: IITs and IISc on behalf of the National Coordination Board(NCB) GATE Committee.

Who Can Apply? Students in their final year, or students who completed a graduation in Economics, Commerce, or Liberal Arts.

Mode: Computer Based Test (CBT)

Questions: MCQs (Multiple Choice Questions), MSQs (Multiple Select Questions), and NAT (Numerical Answer Type)

Frequency: Conducted once a year (usually in February)

Qualification: Candidates must satisfy any one of the following conditions:

  • Currently studying in the final year of a Bachelor's degree.
  • Completed a Bachelor's degree from a recognised institution.
  • Currently studying or have completed a Master's degree.

Age: No age limit.

Minimum Marks:

  • No minimum percentage required.
  • Individual institutes may prescribe their own admission criteria for postgraduate programmes.

Attempts: Unlimited attempts.

Question Type: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ), Multiple Select Questions (MSQ), and Numerical Answer Type (NAT)

Duration: 3 Hours (180 minutes)

  • General Aptitude - 10 Questions
  • Compulsory Reasoning - 15 Questions
  • Economics - 40 Questions

Total Marks: 100 Marks

  • General Aptitude - 15 marks
  • Reasoning - 25 marks
  • Economics - 60 marks

  • Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ):
    • Correct Answer: +1 or +2 Marks (Depending on the question value)
    • Wrong Answer: -1/3 Mark (for 1-mark questions) | -2/3 Mark (for 2-mark questions)
  • Multiple Select Questions (MSQ):
    • Correct Answer: +1 or +2 Marks (All correct options must be selected)
    • Wrong Answer: 0 Marks (No negative marking | No partial credit)
  • Numerical Answer Type (NAT):
    • Correct Answer: +1 or +2 Marks (Answer typed via virtual keypad must match range)
    • Wrong Answer: 0 Marks (No negative marking)

Frequency: Conducted once a year (Usually in February)
