IIT JAM (Indian Institute of Technology - Joint Admission Test for Masters)

IIT JAM is a national-level entrance examination conducted for admission to postgraduate science programmes in premier institutes of India.

Students can use their IIT JAM score to apply for various postgraduate science courses.

Conducted by: Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

The exam is used for admissions to IITs, IISc Bengaluru, IIEST Shibpur, IIITs, IISERs, IACS Kolkata, etc...

Eligibility: Bachelor's Degree

Mode: Computer Based Test (CBT)

Questions: Question paper has three sections

  • Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), Multiple Select Questions (MSQs), and Numerical Answer Type (NAT)

    • Frequency: Conducted once a year (usually February)

    Qualification: Bachelor's degree from a recognised university.

    Age: No age limit.

    Minimum Marks:

    • 55% - General / OBC-NCL / EWS
    • 50% - SC / ST / PwD

    Attempts: No restriction on the number of attempts.

    Mode: Computer Based Test (CBT)

    Question Type: MCQs, MSQs and NAT Questions

    • MCQ (Multiple Choice Questions): Choose one correct answer from the given options.
    • MSQ (Multiple Select Questions): More than one option may be correct. You must select all correct answers.
    • NAT (Numerical Answer Type Questions): No options are given. You must calculate and enter the numerical answer.

    Exam Frequency: Conducted once a year

    Duration: 3 Hours

    Total Questions: 60

    Total Marks: 100 Marks

    Question Paper Structure:

    Question paper has three sections

    • Section A: MCQs - 30 Questions
    • Section B: MSQs - 10 Questions
    • Section C: NAT - 20 Questions

    Marking Scheme:

    • Section A (MCQs):
      • +1 mark and +2 marks for correct answers
      • -1/3 mark for wrong 1-mark questions
      • -2/3 mark for wrong 2-mark questions
    • Section B (MSQs):
      • +2 marks for correct answers
      • No negative marking
    • Section C (NAT):
      • +1 mark and +2 marks for correct answers
      • No negative marking
