JEE Advanced (Joint Entrance Examination - Advanced)
JEE Advanced (Joint Entrance Examination Advanced) is a national-level entrance exam for admission into prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).
Only the top candidates who qualify JEE Main are eligible to appear for JEE Advanced.
Conducted by:Conducted every year by one of the IITs on a rotational basis under the guidance of the Joint Admission Board (JAB).
The organizing IIT changes every year and is selected from seven zonal IITs including IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, and IIT Roorkee.

Eligibility: Must be among the top qualifiers of JEE Main (and meet category-wise cutoffs).
Mode of Exam: Computer Based Test (CBT)
Exam Format: 2 compulsory papers (Paper 1 & Paper 2) conducted on the exact same day.
Total Questions: Varies every year (determined by the organizing IIT).
Frequency: Conducted once a year (usually in May / June).
1. Qualification: Passed or appearing in Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
2. Age Limit (For 2026 Exam):
- General / OBC / EWS: Born on or after October 1, 2001
- SC / ST / PwD: Born on or after October 1, 1996 (5-year relaxation)
3. JEE Main Cutoff: Must rank among the top 2,50,000 qualifiers in JEE Main Paper 1.
4. Class 12 Performance (For IIT Admission): Must secure at least 75% marks (65% for SC/ST/PwD) OR be in the top 20 percentile of your respective board.
5. Maximum Attempts: Up to 2 times in 2 consecutive years.
For JEE Advanced 2026, you are eligible if you appeared class 12 for the first time in:
- ✅ 2026 (Current Year / Appearing)
- ✅ 2025 (1st Year Dropper)
- ❌ 2024 or earlier – Not Eligible
⚠️ Crucial Rule: If you previously accepted an IIT seat (even if you later withdrew), you are disqualified from attempting the exam again.
Mode: Online (Computer-Based Test)
Papers: Two papers – Paper 1 and Paper 2 (both compulsory)
Subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics
Duration: 3 hours for each paper (PwD: 4 hours)
Question Type: MCQs, Numerical Value Questions, Match the Following
Exam Frequency: Conducted once a year (usually May/June)
Total Questions & Marks: Varies every year
Marking Scheme: Varies every year (includes partial and negative marking)
Note: Negative marking is applicable in some questions. The marking scheme may vary each year, so read the instructions carefully during the exam.
The total number of questions changes every year, but Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics always have equal weightage.
Both Paper 1 and Paper 2 are split equally among all three subjects. For example, if a paper has 54 total questions, it will contain exactly 18 Physics, 18 Chemistry, and 18 Math questions.
Through JEE Advanced, students can get admission to various undergraduate and integrated programs at the IITs.
