NIFT Entrance Examination

NIFT Entrance Examination is a national-level entrance exam conducted for admission to programmes offered by the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT).

A student interested in fashion, design, styling, or creative industries appears for the NIFT Entrance Examination.

Based on the score and selection process, the student can apply for programmes offered by NIFT campuses across India.

Courses may include: Fashion Design, Fashion Communication, Textile Design, Knitwear Design, Accessory Design, Fashion Technology, Fashion Management, and related programmes.

Who Can Apply? Students who have completed or are appearing for Class 12 (UG programmes) or a bachelor's degree (PG programmes).

Eligibility: Varies depending on the programme (e.g., maximum age limit of 24 for UG; no age limit for PG).

Exam Pattern: Includes GAT and CAT written tests, followed by a Situation Test or Personal Interview depending on the course.

Mode: Hybrid (Computer-Based Test for GAT; Paper-Based drawing test for CAT).

Frequency: Usually conducted once a year (usually in February).

Qualification:

  • UG Programs (B.Des): Must have passed or be appearing for Class 12 (10+2) or equivalent from any stream.
  • UG Programs (B.F.Tech): Must have passed or be appearing for Class 12 with mandatory Physics and Mathematics.
  • PG Programs (M.Des, MFM, M.F.Tech): Must possess or be pursuing a Bachelor's degree from a recognized institution.

Age Limit:

Undergraduate (UG):

  • General - Maximum age must be under 24 years
  • SC/ST/PWD :- 5-year relaxation .

Postgraduate (PG):

  • There is no upper or lower age limit.

Minimum Marks:

  • There is no minimum aggregate percentage required in your past qualifying exam to sit for the NIFT test.

Attempts:

  • There is no restriction on the number of attempts, provided UG candidates still meet the maximum age criteria.

Question Type: MCQs (in GAT), Subjective Drawing Questions (in CAT), and 3D Model-Making (in Situation Test)

  • MCQ (Multiple Choice Questions): Choose one correct answer from the given options.
  • Subjective Drawing Questions: Sketch your original design, visual concept, or layout directly onto the provided paper sheets.
  • 3D Model-Making (Situation Test): Construct a physical 3D replica or prototype based on a creative theme using a mandatory raw-material kit provided at the center.

Exam Frequency: Conducted once a year(usually in February)

Duration: 2 Hours for GAT | 3 Hours for CAT | 2 Hours for Situation Test

Total Questions: 100 Questions (GAT) + 3 Questions (CAT) + 1 Choice-based Model Task with a brief English write-up (Situation Test)

Marks Distribution:

  • B.Des:
    • GAT: 100 Marks (100 Questions)
    • CAT: 100 Marks
    • Situation Test: Conducted after qualifying the written examination.
  • M.Des:
    • GAT: 120 Marks (120 Questions)
    • CAT: 100 Marks
    • Personal Interview: Conducted after qualifying the written examination.
  • B.F.Tech:
    • GAT: 150 Marks (150 Questions)
  • MFM / M.F.Tech:
    • GAT: 150 Marks (150 Questions)
    • Personal Interview: Conducted after qualifying the written examination.

Marking Scheme:

  • GAT (General Ability Test):
    • +1 mark for each correct answer.
    • -0.25 mark for each wrong answer (negative marking penalty).
    • No marks for unattempted questions.
  • CAT (Creative Ability Test):
    • Evaluated out of 100 marks based on innovation, neatness, color composition, and drawing skills.
    • No negative marking for incorrect or unfinished drawings.
  • Situation Test (Phase 2 Model):
    • Evaluated based on creativity, visualization, drawing skills, color concepts and design thinking
    • No negative marking. Marks are awarded progressively based on your innovation and structural layout.

Candidates who qualify the NIFT Entrance Examination may apply for various undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes offered across NIFT campuses.
