UGC NET (University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test)

UGC NET is a national-level examination conducted to find out the candidates for Assistant Professor, Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), and Ph.D. admissions in Indian universities and colleges.

Students who have completed or are pursuing a postgraduate degree can apply for this examination in their selected subject.

Conducted by: National Testing Agency (NTA) on behalf of the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Who Can Apply? Candidates with a Master's degree or equivalent postgraduate qualification from a recognised university.

Mode: Computer-Based Test (CBT)

Questions: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)

Duration: 3 Hours

Frequency: Conducted twice a year(June & December)

1. Educational Qualification: Must have a Master's Degree (or equivalent) in Humanities, Social Sciences, Commerce, Computer Applications, etc., from a recognized university.

2. Minimum Post-Graduation Marks:

  • General / EWS: Minimum 55% aggregate marks.
  • OBC-NCL / SC / ST / PwD / Third Gender: Minimum 50% aggregate marks.

3. Age Limit:

  • Junior Research Fellowship (JRF): Maximum 30 years (Relaxation up to 5 years applies for reserved categories and female applicants).
  • Assistant Professor & Ph.D: No upper age limit.

4. Appearing / Final Year Students: Candidates currently in their final year of a Master’s degree or awaiting results can apply provisionally.

Mode: Online (Computer-Based Test)

Question Type: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)

Exam Frequency: Conducted twice a year (June & December)

Duration: 3 Hours (180 minutes with continuous timing; no break between papers)

Total Questions: 150 Questions

Total Marks: 300 Marks

Marking Scheme:

  • ✅ Correct Answer: +2 Marks
  • ❌ Wrong Answer: 0 Marks

Note: There is no negative marking penalty for incorrect or unattempted responses across either paper.

  • Paper 1 (General Aptitude / Teaching & Research): 50 Questions (100 Marks)
  • Paper 2 (Subject-Specific / Core Domain): 100 Questions (200 Marks)

Total: 150 Questions | 300 Marks
